HMRC halts thousands of scam text messages. HM Revenue & Customs has stopped thousands of taxpayers from receiving scam texts, with 90% of the most convincing texts halted before they reached recipients’ phones. Fraudsters alleging to be from HMRC send messages to unsuspecting members of the public that often make false claims, such as they are due tax refunds. The messages may also contain links to websites that harvest personal information. HMRC is working with the National Cyber Security Centre to further its work.
